âCashing Inâ
âTy, you get my girl home okay,â said Dad, hugging me goodbye.
âYou know I will.â Ty answered in a tone more formal than necessary, like he was babysitting me or something.
âIâm sixteen now, you know. I could learn to drive myself.â I hadnât mentioned it since Grammieâs the day when Dad and I went. Couldnât hurt, so I gave it another futile shot. Ty and Dad looked at each other and rolled their eyes. âWhen youâre willing to sit down and let me teach you to read a map so youâre not driving around lost in your own hometown, maybe weâll talk about it, okay? Just let your old dad get used to one thing at a time.â
I nodded in defeat. He was right. I had absolutely no sense of direction. It was pathetic. The only thing they could tease me about that was true, although I would never admit it to any of them.
âWanna get some ice cream?â Ty asked as I slammed my heavy door shut. I was so embarrassed I didnât know what to say. I was beet red, which confused him. It wasnât exactly a normal response to that question, so of course I made a joke.
âUnlike you who gets paid for the slaving we do at Cameron Manor, the only thing I have in my purse is makeup and a cell phone.â
He laughed as he swung the truck around to face the road. I didnât realize how the sound of his laughter made me feel before now, happy and excited.
âDonât worry, I got you,â he said, amused by my poverty. I sighed, wishing I could say the same about him.
âBrewsterâs okay?â he asked, knowing it was my favorite. I nodded, trying not to think of all the kids that would be hanging out there since it was summer. It was just a few minutes to Rogers Road and when we pulled up I could see the parking lot was nearly full.
âWe can go somewhere else if you want,â I suggested.
âNah, I donât mind waiting. I want to get a hotdog too and theyâre the best here.â
I flipped down the mirror and fixed my bangs under my hat before we got out. I was expecting him to be halfway to the door by the time I was done, but he waited and didnât say a word. I realized that I hadnât given him enough credit, of course heâd sit and wait. Just because we werenât a couple didnât mean he wasnât still a gentleman. Of course I knew heâd wait for me and it made me wish he were mine all the more. I was starting to get bummed again and right now there wasnât one single thing that would distract me from the pain of loving him. I sighed deeply.
âYou okay?â he asked, picking up on my mood as he always did.
âFine,â I lied. âIâm ready. We should go before it gets any more crowded in there.â

There were only a couple of tables to choose from so I just followed him to the one by the window.
